Biographical details:
Most Rev. Thomas K. Mensah (Bishop of Obuasi).
Most Rev. Thomas Kwaku Mensah was born on February 2, 1935 at Asamang in Ashanti Region. He had his Primary and middle school education (Now Junior Secondary School) at Banso, Lakeside and Bekwai in Ashanti respectively from 1944-1952. After his elementary education, he took Private Correspondence courses in typing and Commercial Studies from Bennett College, England from 1953-1958. From 1954-1957 he was appointed as a Clerical assistant with the Ghana Railways. With dint of hard work and dedication, he was promoted to the position of a clerical officer from 1957-1959 but with time left for the preparatory seminary at Jamasi in 1959-1960.
From the preparatory Seminary he continued to St. Theresa’s Minor seminary at Amisano near Elmina (1960-1966) and St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Cape Coast respectively (1966-1971).
He was later sent to the United States to continue his theological studies at St. Maur’s School of Theology (Benedictine college) in Indianapolis, USA (1971-1973) and obtained the Master’s degree in Divinity. After obtaining his Master’s degree, he was ordained into the Priesthood on June 3, 1973 in Indianapolis, USA.
Between 1973-1974 he studied Business administration at Bellarmine College, Louisville, Kentucky and obtained Diploma in Business Administration.
After his studies in Business Administration, he came back to Ghana and took the following appointments:
- Assistant Secretary and Major Domo to the Bishop of Kumasi (1974-1975)
- Secretary and Major Domo to the Bishop of Kumasi (1975-1978).
- Acting Parish Priest, St. Paul’s Parish, New Amakom, Kumasi (1975-1978)
- Co-ordinator of projects and Diocesan Youth Chaplain (1975-1978)
- Recording Secretary of the Ghana Bishops’ Conference from (1974-1978)
- Chairman for the Council of Priests (1979-1982)
- Appointed Rector of St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu, Cape Coast (1978-1991)
- Elected Vice chairman of the AECAWA Seminaries commission (Association of Episcopal Conferences of Anglophone West Africa) from 1980-1987)
- National President of National Association of Heads of Catholic Higher Institutions (AHCHI) 1987-1990
- A member of the Reconciliation Committee of Cape Coast University. (1988-1990).
After being the Rector for so many years, he left for his sabbatical where he successfully took a Course in spirituality at the Jesuit School of Spirituality, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. (1990-1991)
Back to Ghana, he was appointed:
- The Spiritual Director for St. Hubert Minor Seminary in Kumasi. (1991-1992)
- Acting Chaplain, Opoku Ware Secondary School, Kumasi (1991-1992)
- Secretary General of Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and of the National Catholic Secretariat (1992-1995).
- Made Honorary Prelate (Monsignor) in 1992.
In March 3, 1995 he was nominated Bishop of Obuasi and was ordained Bishop in Accra on May 28,1995. He was consequently installed Bishop of Obuasi on June 3, 1995. He has since held the following positions:
- President, Ghana Catholic Laity Council (July 1995-1996)
- Chairman, AECAWA Seminaries Commission (1995-2001)
- Episcopal Chairman, Health Department, National Catholic Secretariat (1997 to date)
- Member, AECAWA Standing Committee (2001-2004)
- Member, Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care, Vatican (2003 to date)
- Member, Council of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (2003 to date).
