A concelebrated high Mass was recently held at St. Martin’s Secondary School at Adoagyiri-Nsawam, to commission Rev. Fr. John Akrasi Acheampong, SVD, as the Acting Headmaster of the School.
He replaces Rev. Fr. Patrick Ofori, SVD, who is the Parish Priest of St. Margaret Mary Parish, Dansoman in Accra.
Mrs. Beatrice Lokko, the District Director of Education, acted in that position for two years before Fr. Acheampong was confirmed as the new Headmaster.
Very Rev. Fr. Gabriel Kumordji, SVD, Provincial Superior of Society of Divine Word Missionaries was the main celebrant with Rev. Fr. Joseph Addai, SVD, Chaplain and tutor and Fr. Acheampong, as the concelebrants.
Fr. Kumordji, in a homily, exhorted both teaching, non teaching staff and students to rally behind the new Headmaster to run the School efficiently. “I want to see a united St. Martin’s than before to enable it climb up the academic ladder.”
Touching on why holy Mass should be celebrated for Fr. Acheampong, the Provincial Superior said “Mass is the celebration of life and death of Christ but in this case, we celebrate life.”
Fr. Kumordji urged Fr. Acheampong to focus on moving the School forward.
In attendance were Rev. Bro. Tarcisius de Ruyter, SVD; Rev. Bro. Paul Ayitey, SVD; Rev. Sr. Elizabeth Newman and Cecilia Gross, both of the School of Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) the District Chief Executive for the Akwapim South District; Mr. Edward Nyarko Adu, a number of Religious, well wishers and the 92 year-old mother of Fr. Acheampong.
St. Martin’s was established in 1966 by the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries, and as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary, a grand durbar was held at the School Assembly hall.
Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Minister for Education, Science and Sports, was the Guest Speaker and Mr. Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister, an old boy, was the Guest of Honour.
