Nuncio donates ¢500 million to Catholic Varsity

The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev. George Kocherry, has donated a cheque for ¢500 million to the Catholic University College of Ghana at Fiapre in Sunyani to set-up a Scholarship Fund.

At a ceremony at Fiapre, to lay the foundation stone for the Resource Centre of the Catholic University, the Nuncio said since the beginning of the University, it has always been his desire to set-up a scholarship fund for the poor/needy, but brilliant students of the University.

The Nuncio handed over the cheque to His Eminence Cardinal Ivan Dias, the Holy Father’s Special Envoy, for presentation to the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC).
It was received by Most Rev. Lucas Abadamloora, President of the Conference, who is also Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga.

Receiving the cheque, Bishop Abadamloora, thanked the Nuncio and Cardinal Dias, for the gesture and pledged the Bishops’ Conference and the entire Church’s commitment to the University.

Archbishop Kocherry said he was impressed by the efforts the Bishops were making to give quality education to Ghanaians, stating that “it has also been my intention to raise the Scholarship Fund to one billion Cedis”, his target.
“It is my desire that the University would be the only institution in the Country to offer the highest number of scholarships to students in Ghana”, adding that this goal would be achieved in the next five to ten years.

The Nuncio noted that the Catholic Church had built 3,567 Schools and 72 Vocational/Technical Institutes around the Country and now has a University.
