His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples at the Vatican, was given a tumultuous welcome on arrival at the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani on Wednesday, April 24.
As part of his programme, he visited the tomb of the late Bishop James Kwadwo Owusu, a former Bishop of the Diocese, located at the basement of the Cathedral.
He observed a minute’s silence and sprinkled holy water on the tomb.
Cardinal Dias was accompanied on the visit by Most Rev. George Kocherry, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana and Most Rev. Lucas Abadamloora, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga.
The Cardinal recalled that he laid the foundation stone of the Cathedral when he was the Pro-Nuncio to Ghana and commended the Priests, Religious and the faithful for their tireless efforts in completing it.
The Cathedral was dedicated on November 25, 1990, the feast of Christ the King, by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Tomko, then Prefect of the Congregation of the Propagation of Faith (Propaganda Fide).
Cardinal Dias urged the faithful to lend their unending support to Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi and the Clergy to bring more spiritual and infrastructural development to the Diocese.
Bishop Gyamfi in his welcome address, said the Diocese was blessed with many projects, including the establishment of the Catholic University College of Ghana.
He expressed his appreciation to the Cardinal for making a stop-over in Sunyani and to visit the tomb of the late Bishop Owusu.
