Archbishop Sarpong asks Catholics to avoid sin

Write-up by Steve Kakrabah-Quarshie

Most Rev. Peter Kwasi Sarpong, Archbishop of Kumasi, recently addressed the congregation at St. Peter’s Minor Basilica in Kumasi on Divine Mercy Sunday, and urged them to be compassionate and avoid sin.

He asked them to adopt the attitude of compassion, kindness, humility gentleness and peace, “because we cannot hope for God’s mercy when we are in sinful disposition”.

The Archbishop noted that the country’s future development could only be achieved if Ghanaians replaced arrogance with humility, pleasure with self-control, spirit of divisiveness with unity and tribalism with patriotism.

He told the congregation that “it is in such a situation that God’s mercy will be profusely forthcoming” saying that God’s mercy is at the disposal of everybody.

Archbishop Sarpong asked Ghanaians to forgive one another, adding.

“Let us pray for Ghana; let us pray that our compatriots will do away with such earthly desires, indecency, immorality, lust, evil passion and greed, for greediness is a form of idol worship”

He said though despair has made human beings incapable of forgiving, God forgives unconditionally”.

Archbishop Sarpong said the parables of the prodigal son and the lost sheep were two examples which highlighted God’s mercy.

He defined Divine Mercy as God’s compassion for humankind, but that did not mean that God condones our sins.
