CATHOLIC VARSITY Beacon of hope for Church – Cardinal Dias

From Damian Avevor, Sunyani

His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, has said that the establishment of the Catholic University College of Ghana at Fiapre in the Sunyani Diocese, should be a pride for Catholics and Ghanaians, especially the youth.

He said this in brief remarks at the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani before leaving to lay the foundation stone for the construction of the Resource Centre of the University.

The Cardinal commended the Chiefs and people of Sunyani for donating the land for the projects as their contribution towards Catholic education.

Cardinal Dias entreated the students at the University to learn hard, cautioning them that “it is not what you learn but what you assimilate to give to other people that matters.”

Present at the ceremony at Fiapre were Archbishop George Kocherry, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Bishop Matthew Gyamfi of Sunyani and Bishop Lucas Abadamloora, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference.

Also present were Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister; Prof. Ebow Mensah and Mr. E.K.A Odoom, Acting President and Registrar of the University respectively; Nana Bosoma Aso-Nkrawiri II, Omahene of Sunyani Traditional Council; Nana Takyi Ababio II, Fiapre Krontihene and Nana Ama Konadu, Fiapre Krontihemaa and Mr. Moses Dani Baah, MP for Sissala East and his wife, Benedicta, Managing Director of Danib Limited, one of the building Contractors of the Project.

In attendance also were staff and students of the University, parishioners of the Christ the King Cathedral, including the Knights of Marshall and St. John International, Christian Mothers and the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus.
Cardinal Dias entreated those entrusted with the education of students at the University to teach them (students) “to join discoveries of human wisdom with truth of the gospel, so that they may be able to keep the true faith and live up to it.”

The Cardinal prayed that the students would find in their teachers the image of Christ, so that enriched with both human and divine learning, they would in turn be ready to assist others.

He expressed the hope that the Centre when completed, would be of immense benefit to the students
Bishop Gyamfi was grateful to the Cardinal and was optimistic that the project would be completed in the shortest possible time.

He said since its inception in 2003, the number of students has increased from 54 to 500; pursuing various courses, while a Masters programme in Religious education is being undertaken.

Mr. Baffour-Awuah said that the laying of foundation stone ends speculations that the University was being taken from Sunyani, and expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for her role in education.

Preceding the laying of foundation stone, some sealed documents of the University in a metal cylinder were fixed on the foundation stone.

The documents include Certificate of Accreditation; document from the chiefs for releasing the land; all faculty members, site plan (1999), students guide handbook; names of all students and pioneering students.
