New Communications Director for NCS

Dr. Africanus Lewil Diedong has been appointed the new Executive Secretary of the Department of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM) of the National Catholic Secretariat (NCS).
He takes over from Mr. Benedict Assorow, who is now the Director of Communications of the Symposium for Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).

A letter signed by Most Rev. Lucas Abadamloora, Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, said his appointment takes immediate effect.

As an Executive Secretary of Communications, Dr. Diedong is expected to co-ordinate all activities of  Diocesan DEPSOCOMS, be a link between the Catholic Church and the secular media, and to encourage the training of personnel for Communication Centres in the Church in Ghana.

Dr. Diedong holds a Doctorate in Social Science with specialization in Social Communications from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

He also holds an M.A in Social Science with specialisation in Social Communications, a B.A (Hons) in Social Science and a Certificate in Practical Theology Communication from the same University in 2003, 2002 and 2000 respectively.
A product of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, from 1992-1994 where he obtained a Diploma in Journalism, Dr. Diedong holds a Certificate in the French language from Mission-Langues, Belgium.
He obtained his Ordinary and Advanced Levels Certificates from the Nandom Secondary School in the Upper West Region (1984-1989) and Tamale Secondary School in Northern Region (1989-1991) respectively. He did a year’s National Service at the Tome JSS in the Upper West Region after his Sixth Form studies.

Among his vast working experience include a Reporter at the Ghana Information Services Department in the Upper East Region from 1994-1995 (National Service), Editor, The Diocesan Call, Tamale Archdiocesan newsletter of DEPSOCOM, 1996-1998; and Reporter, The Standard, Ghana’s national Catholic weekly newspaper in Accra from 1998-2000.

He had also worked with the Daily Independent in Malta in 2002.
Dr. Diedong has received a number of Honours, including an International Award for Excellence in Communication in September 2001, for defending fundamental Human Rights of all, raising public consciousness, and for promoting values.

It was conferred on him at the World Convention and Congress of International Catholic Union of the Press (UCIP) at Fribourg, Switzerland.
He also delivered a keynote address on “Promoting Inter-Cultural Dialogue in the Public Media” at the 20th World Congress of the UCIP in Bangkok, Thailand in October 11, 2004.

Dr. Diedong delivered a Paper on “Practising Journalism in Neo-Democratic Culture – Case Study Ghana” at the International Association of Mass Communication Researchers' Conference (IAMCR) in Cairo, Egypt in 2006.
Dr. Diedong is a Fellow of International Catholic Fellowships for Research in Media, Religion and Culture.
He speaks English, French, Italian and Dagaare.

He hails from Nandom-Ko in the Upper West Region.
