My dear youth, life is rather interesting as you grow from youth to adulthood. Life becomes more and more purposeful and worth appreciating. The adult, you know, sits down to have a second look at whatever happens around him particularly when it comes to decision-making.
You see, one very peculiar attitude in our youthful days has to do with mischief. The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines ‘mischief’ as “a foolish or thoughtless behaviour likely to cause trouble; not very serious wrongdoing.”
Mischief also has to do with playing tricks on others. Interestingly, boys seem to be more mischievous than girls. While the boys may be so very involved in mischief, the girls watch the boys, apparently admire the mischievous behaviour and giggle at it.
My dear youth, mischief may or may not lead you to trouble. Quite a number of our thoughtless behaviour, or thoughts not meant to harm anybody, are likely to lead us into trouble. What are some of these thoughtless behaviour of the youth? You may throw a stone at a colleague! You may hit a friend on the forehead! You use your painting brushes or indelible markers to write graphite on the wall!
You may hide and shout out the name of an elderly person (teacher, housemaster, etc), You may jump a school wall at an incredible height! You may hide Daddy’s cherished item and apparently forget where you put it. The list can be tall!
You see, while the mischief may be thoughtless and amusing, it can sometimes also be a source of trouble for you. In most cases too, you may find it difficult to explain your action particularly when there is a hurt. Out of mischief, you may hit your friend in the groin and she/he sustains a serious injury which will cost your parents a lot of money in terms of medicals.
You may write graphitti on your school wall and end up painting the whole block at a cost.
My dear youth, can we for a moment spare a thought for whatever we do and spare our parent/guardians the inconveniences of our action? Out of mischief, you may alter the marks and grades on your report sheets and see trouble at the end of the day.
Anyway, mischief can also give us comic relief to laugh at our victims. What can we say but to work at whatever we do with moderation. Mischief is always all over the place but let us be careful for that it does not become a source of harm for any colleague or friend. Stay blessed!
