The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), has in a statement clarified the situation on the Catholic University College of Ghana at Fiapre in the Sunyani Diocese.
The statement said in accordance with the age-old Catholic tradition of promoting Christian, integral, holistic and excellent education for humanity, the Catholic Hierarchy of Ghana in 1994 decided to establish a tertiary educational institution. For this reason, it set up an academically and administratively very powerful committee to plan a Catholic University from all its dimensions.
After about four years of very assiduous work, the Committee submitted its report detailing the courses to be taken initially, and recommending the establishment of a main campus in one Region with satellite campuses to be opened in the other nine [9] Regions of Ghana “as and when the need arises”.
Although land was available in all the Regions, the Bishops’ Conference followed the Committee’s proposals and chose Brong Ahafo Region as the location for the University. We are grateful, therefore, to the chief and people of Fiapre and Sunyani for the generous offer of land, and to the Diocese of Sunyani, for placing its Pastoral Centre at the disposal of the University Project.
The Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre, is therefore an initiative of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference to which it is still deeply committed. That is why His Excellency J. A. Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana, was invited in 2003 to cut the sod for the commencement of the University building project.
On the issue of the Tantra Hill campus, the Conference would like to say that this is also an initiative of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference; and it is operating as an institution under the auspices of the same Conference.
The Conference now wishes to thank all beneficiaries and supporters of the Catholic University project. It wishes to thank especially His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, who recently laid the foundation stone of the administration block and blessed the whole project of the University College at Fiapre.
