First Mass in Elmina

1879   Sir James Marshall requested Missionaries for the Gold Coast at the Office of the Propagation of Faith, Rome Creation of Apostolic Prefecture Of the Gold Coast.
1880   Frs. August Moreau and Eugene Murat, SMA Fathers landed in Elmina. First Catholic Baptism in Gold Coast-a year old boy George August Salmon in Elmina.
1882   First attempts to open a Mission in Kumasi.
1883  

O.L.A. Sisters came to Elmina: Sr. Ignatius (Irishwoman) and Sr.Potential from Switzerland, First girls school opened in Elmina

1889  

Foundation of a Mission in Cape Coast.

1890  

Blessing of the church in Elmina. Keta becomes S.M.A. resident station.OLA Sisters open school for girls in Cape Coast.

Accra station opened and closed

1894   Second attempts to open Mission in Kumasi.
1896  

Cape Coast becomes the headquarters of the Gold Coast Mission. Cape Coast becomes Apostolic Vicariate with Bishop of Cape Coast (1906-1924) White Fathers opened Mission in Kumasi.

Bishop Klaus becomes Bishop of Cape Coast (1904-1905).

1906  

Bishop Ignatius Hummel becomes third Vicar Apostolic and Bishop of Cape Coast (1906-1924). White Fathers opened Mission in Navrongo.

                 
1907   Sekondi becomes resident station.
1908   Foundation of Kumasi Mission
1917   First Mass said in Tamale.
1922   Fr. Anatasius Odaye Dogli ordained as first African Priest in the Gold Coast.
1923   Lower Volta becomes Vicariate. Bishop Herman becomes first Vicar Apostolic.
1924   Bishop Hauger becomes Bishop of Cape Coast (1925-1932).
1926  

Accra becomes resident station. Apostolic Prefecture created in Navrongo, Little Servant  of the Sacred Heart arrived in Gold Coast. Opened Dispensaries at Eikwe in Cape Coast Vicariate and at Kpandu in Lower Volta  Vicariate.

1928  

Cathedral in Cape Coast was blessed and dedicated to St. Francis on November 28th 1928.

1929   Blessing of the church in Kumasi Foundation of the Jirapa Mission .
1930  

Golden Jubilee  of the Gold Coast Mission celebrated. Foundation stone of Seminar for African priests was blessed at Amisano.

                 
1932   Apostolic Vicariate OF Ashanti was created with Kumasi, Obuasi, Bekwai Berekum and Konongo as principal stations, Bishop Paulissen became the first Vicar Apostolic. (1933-1947) Bishop William Portar becomes Bishopof Cape Coast  (1933-1960).
1933   Apostolic Vicariate of Navrongo was created with Bishop Morin as first Vicar Apostolic. (1933-1947) Bishop William Porter becomes Bishop of Cape Coast (1933-1960).
1936   Opening of St. Augustine’s College –Cape Coast
1947   Apostle Vicariate of Accra was created and foundation of Tamale Mission.
1948   Bishop Bowers becomes Apostolic Vicar of Accra (1948-1953)
1950  

Gold Coast becomes Ecclesiastical Province. Cape Coast becomes and Archdiocese. Keta Kumasi, Accra and Tamale become dioceses.

                  
1951   Enthronement of  Archbishop William T. Porter as Archbishop of Cape Coast, First National Eucharistic Congress in Kumasi- February 19th-25th 1951.
1952  

Opening of St. Johns Secondary School – Sekondi, Opoku Ware – Kumasi Bishop Herman- Kpandu

1957   St. Peters Major Seminary opened at Pedu
1959   Diocese of Wa was created
1960  

Archbishop John Kojo Amissah enthroned as Archbishop of Cape Coast, Bishop Peter Dery becomes Bishop of Wa.

1961   Bishop Joseph Essuah becomes bishop of Kumasi
1969  

Sekondi- Takoradi Diocese created with Bishop Essuah transferred from Kumasi as First Bishop.

1970   Bishop Peter Kwesi Sarpong becomes Bishop of  Kumasi.
1971   Bishop Dominic Andoh becomes Bishop of Accra
1973  

Bishop Rudolph Akanlu becomes Bishop of Navrongo.Bishop Francis A.K. Lodonu becomes Bishop of  Ho  Sunyani Diocese Was created with Bishop James Kwadwo Owusu as the first Bishop.

                 
1975   Bishop Gregory Kpiebaya becomes Bishop of Wa
1977  

Archdiocese of Tamale was created.

1980   Catholic Church in Ghana celebrates 100 years. Pope John Paul 11 visit Ghana. National Catholic Secretariat,  Centenary House Building Commissioned by the Pope.
1992   Archidiocese of Accra was created with Archbishop Dominic Andoh as Archbishop. Koforidua Diocese was created with Bishop Charles Palmer Buckle as first Bishop.
1993   Bishop Lucas Abadamloora, ordained and becomes Bishop of Navronog Bolgatanga.
1994   Bishop Paul Bemile ordained and becomes Bishop of Wa. Dioceses of Damongo, Keta-Akatsi, Jasikan,Obuasi and Konongo Mampong created and Bishop Philip Naameh, Anthony Adanuty, Gabriel A. Mante, Thomas Mensah and Joseph Osei-Bonsu ordained for the diocese respectively.
1997   National Pastoral Congress in Cape Coast Diocese of Goaso created.
1998  

2nd National Eucharis tics Congress in Tamale. Bishop Peter Atuahene ordained Bishop for Goaso Diocese. Bishop John Martin Darko ordained Bishop for Sekondi-Takoradi. Diocese of Yendi created

                 
1999   Bishop Vincent Sowah Boi Nai ordained for Yendi Diocese. Diocese of Wiaso crated with Bishop Joseph Eissien as first Bishop.
2000   Bishop Joseph Eissien ordained for Wiawso Diocese. National millennium and Jubilee Celebration in Cape Coast.
2003  

June 28, Ordination of Bishop Matthew Gyanfi of Suyani.

October 21, 2003, Ghana get its first Cardinal – His Eminence Peter Cardinal Kodwo Appiah Turkson

2004   January- Bishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle appointed Archbishop of  

Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.November 18-20, Third National Eucharistics Congress in Kumasi. His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Okogie of Lagos, Nigeria as Special Envoy of Pope Benedict XVI.
