Very Rev. Fr. Martin Asiedu-Peprah, Vice-Rector of St. Peter’s Seminary, Pedu, Cape Coast, has asked Ghanaians to assume greater responsibility in funding the training of Priests in Ghana.
Fr. Asiedu-Peprah said this recently when he made a special appeal in support of St. Peter’s Seminary’s two billion cedi ultra modern Golden Jubilee Library Project.
He said assistance from abroad which hitherto had helped the seminaries had greatly reduced and the Seminaries are increasingly becoming cash strapped making it difficult to maintain the standards required of them.
Very Rev. Msgr. Matthew Edusei, Rector of the Seminary, who presided over Holy Mass at the Christ the King Parish, Accra, announced that the Seminary had raised ¢200 million from the faithful for the Library.
Ten other formators from the Seminary were assigned to various Churches in Accra and Tema, where a special collection was taken and envelopes given to those willing to make some more contributions to the fund.
Msgr. Edusei said the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET-FUND) has also given ¢500 million towards the construction of a new dormitory and provided 30 brand new computers, and a four printers, a photocopier.
Five Split air conditioners and ¢200,000 for the purchase of books for the library had come from the Alumini.
Additionally, the Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle in Rome, has donated $10,000 to purchase accessories for the computers as well as equipment for Internet connectivity and for networking.
Msgr. Edusei said “a great benefactor of St. Peter’s Seminary who wants to remain anonymous” presented a cheque for ¢100 million to support the completion of the project.
“This same great benefactor had already donated ¢50 million cedis to support the Seminary Library project,” Msgr. Edusei told The Standard.
“This great man has over the years given a lot of financial help to the Seminary including paying the full cost of looking after three Seminarians every year and he remains a great and shining example of what the faithful can do to help train Priests in Ghana,’’ he added.
The total amount raised from the selected Parishes from Accra, Msgr. Edusei said, “ran into millions” but insufficient for the project.
He hoped more people would make their contributions to the Seminary Library project to complete it in time to climax the Golden Jubilee Celebrations scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2007.
